Features
Dan Qing Bowl, with glazing color, was glazed, burned, and polished by grandfather Shu Hsin-Wang, who began to produce bowls from the 1950s. At that time, manpower was gradually replaced with motor. Grandfather produced bowls by jiggering. Clays taken from Danan (now in Taoyuan City) were placed in the plaster mold carved with totem of the time of Japanese occupation and molded with the rotating lathe tool.
Shu Hsin-Wang’s Dan Qing Bowl was at its heyday at that time. It is said that the amount of bowls fired accounted for 40% of the total amount of that in Yingge. Ten bowls as a whole were sold for 5 TWD. Later other kiln factories fired bowls in succession. Therefore, Shui Qing Bowl (water blue) and Yin Yang Bowl (bicolor) were designed. Ten Yin Yang bowls as a whole could be sold for 8~10 TWD. The production was reduced around 1965 when 3.6-inch white porcelain tile and red steel brick. It’s a pity that the formula of Dan Qing glazing color was developed by Shu Hsin-Wang alone, and no handwritten or oral record was left.
At the present time, we can only present the light cyan of Dan Qing glaze with innovative designs based on fragment memory and its unique feature, that is, it can produce natural irregular patterns under high temperature, making it come upon the stage of modern life, developing a brand new “Classical Green” series and retrieving the glazing color for Taiwan ceramic, Taiwanese restricted feelings and the diligent and goods days of Taiwan.
